This project helps individuals access the education they deserve.

Alice is the Social Enterprise Employer Liaison with IASIO’s Recruit & Retain Services. In her role, she supports Social Enterprises who wish to recruit talented people who happen to have a criminal past. Having worked as a criminal barrister within the criminal justice system for many years, I firmly believe that helping people who want to move forward is key to reducing reoffending and benefits society as a whole. Access to education and job opportunities are crucial in that regard.

I care about this because everyone commits a crime at some point in their lives, and everyone benefits from education. Being unlucky enough to get caught doing the former, should not prevent someone from accessing the latter.

Gemma Lynch is a Student Advisor with Maynooth University Access Programme. She works with Maynooth University students who have spent time in prison to put proactive support arrangements in place and encourages potential students with a criminal record to see third level as a realistic option for them.

Claire Hamilton is Professor of Criminology at Maynooth University Department of Law. As a criminologist and former Chairperson of the Irish Penal Reform Trust, she is aware of the critical importance of giving prisoners and people with convictions a fair chance at moving on with their lives.

Dr Rose Ryan is Director of Access at Maynooth University with responsibility for leading strategic change in relation to access and widening participation in higher education. Dr Ryan leads the Maynooth University Access Programme (MAP) which works in partnership across the University and alongside under-represented learners, schools, and communities to increase equity of access and support student success.
